THE COAST BEACHES.

DAR ES SALAAM.

Dar es Salaam - "Heaven of Peace" - is one of the most informal and relaxed cities in the world. Essentially African in character and an ideal centre for holiday in Tanzania, Dar-es-Salaam is the starting point for Tanzania’s "Southern Circuit" embracing wildlife viewing in the Selous, Ruaha and Mikumi, beach holiday, big game fishing and visit to Zanzibar and Mafia Islands. Dar es Salaam is the country’s chief port and commercial centre.

 

BAGAMOYO.

A small town but rich in culture and history.  Bagamoyo is located 75 km. north of Dar es Salaam, the town was born out of Kaole town.  It was one of the most important trading centers on the East African coast during the 18th and 19th centuries.  With unspoilt beaches, the town boasts of the beginning of the Catholic Church in East Africa. 

Bagamoyo once a notorious embarkation port for slave trade, reminders of which can be seen in the shape of shackle rings, stone. Bagamoyo is said to mean "Here I lay down my Heart", a cry of desperation by slaves before they were packed aboard vessels for their voyage into captivity. About 5 km to the South, at Kaole are ruins of coral mosque as well as graves and houses dating back to the late 13th century.

MAFIA ISLAND.

Only 40 minutes flight South of Dar Es Salaam is one of the most exciting Big game fishing and diving location in the world. The virtually unfished waters off the Island abound with rich variety of fish of tremendous size and weight many of them being great fighters.

Catches include marlin, sailfish, shark, kingfish, barracuda,  snapper, rock cod, dolphin, horse mackerel, Wahoo, five finger jack and fimbo. The main fishing season is from September to March. Mafia Island Lodge offers 40 comfortable rooms with air conditioning, with sea view and facilities for underwater diving and "Safaris" along the coast and to neighbouring Islands.

 

ZANZIBAR THE SPICE ISLAND.

Set like a Jewel in tranquil coral waters only 20 minutes flight from Dar es Salaam is one of the World’s most beautiful Islands. Zanzibar its name evokes romantic past. To the shores of this Island came Samarians,  Assyrians, Hindus, Egyptians, Phoenicians, Southern Arabians, Chinese and Malays. From these shores the great European Explorers - Burton, Speke, Livingstone, Krapf, Rebman and Grant set out on their "Voyage of Discovery" into the hinterland.

The different races that have settled in Zanzibar over the centuries have left impact on the people - religions, cuisine culture and architecture are but few. Today visitors can visit the "House of the Wonder" (one of the Palace of former Sultan) walk the narrow streets of the old stone town, visit the Persian Baths, the old slave market, Prison Island and World war shrines. The extensive white-sand beaches, fringed with palm trees that whisper in the tropical breeze offers virgin Holiday destination yet to be discovered.
